City Profile

Birmingham is the second-largest city, urban area, and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, England. The city has been the inspiration for the movies – Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. It was the city’s landscape and surrounding countryside that the author of these famous movies, J. R. Tolkien, who happens to grow up in Birmingham has adopted and made an inspiration of the place for his novels.

This city has also Britain’s busiest theater. Birmingham Hippodrome can be found here. This theater puts on a year-round extravaganza of pantomime, music, and dance with a seating capacity of nearly 2,000. That makes a total of almost 6,000 ticket sales in a year and led to its distinction as the busiest theater in Britain.

Birmingham also has more canals than Venice. If you want to escape the bustling streets in the center and want to soothe the daily stresses of life, cruising the canals will be a great idea. One would surely enjoy the views of the restored industrial mills, workshops, warehouses and even got amazed by the stunning modern architecture.

The international student population in Birmingham is over 10,000 from approximately 150 countries.


There are five universities in Birmingham. These are Aston University, Birmingham City University, University of Birmingham, Newman University, and University College Birmingham. These universities are listed in 37 different university rankings as well as 9 different subject rankings.

Aside from these five universities, this city also has major campuses of the University of Law and BPP University along with the Open University’s West Midlands regional base.

Birmingham has the highest number of research students outside of London. Its research students tally at 32,690.

Getting to and from Birmingham is easy and convenient. With its central location, Birmingham is a major transport hub on the motorway, rail, and canal networks.


Birmingham Airport is the seventh busiest airport by passenger traffic in the UK and the third busiest outside the London area after London and Edinburgh. Airline services operate from Birmingham to many destinations in Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Oceania.


Birmingham New Street is the largest and busiest of the three main railway stations in Birmingham City Center. It is the national hub for CrossCountry, the most extensive long-distance train in Britain.


Bus routes are mainly operated by National Express West Midlands, which has 80% of all bus journeys in this city. There are also 50 other, small registered buses that can be found in the city.


Taxis can also be found in Birmingham. Most of this city’s taxis are equipped with a modern fleet of GPS satellites.


You can also drive your own car or hire a private car taxi. These services are open 24/7 with 300 vehicles for your own convenience.


In Birmingham, every school takes employability very seriously. With these, they incorporate opportunities to enhance a student’s employment prospects like highlighting their work experience opportunities, encouraging volunteering in extra-curricular activities projects such as seminars and events.

 Aside from the things mentioned above, most of the schools develop skills that are attractive to employers. Some of these are strong communication skills, leadership and teamwork, time management and prioritizing one’s workload, and the ability to research, analyze and interpret complex information.
